Wayside Monitoring System (WMS)
TYPES OF WMS DATABASES
There are two types of WMS databases. One is a Full
archive and the other is a Vehicle only
archive.
Archival databases store the processed results and the source data (to support
modelling). They are loaded from a central operational system called a WCM
Node. There can be various archives containing different train types. There are
two types of archives; namely, (a) full trains and vehicle and (b) vehicle
only. The databases used for the archives are exactly the same as all other WCM
databases except that they are used to store long term data and do not
execute any program code.
The Full archive contains information about every train and every wheel on the
train. It includes a vehicle archive as well.
The Vehicle archive contains summary for
each passage of tagged (or pseudo-tagged) vehicle and does not hold the source
data or data at the individual defect level. Vehicle-only archives are very
efficient and can provide long term recall and vehicle defect trending. For a
fully tagged fleet they can store about 8 times longer time periods than the
full archive of the same size.
Archives are essentially read-only with the only writing or data entry done by
an external db transferring in train data and for logging certain user actions
as events. Once an archive is removed from active updating and can be placed in
long term archives it can be used in read-only mode (including directly from a
CD)
Users access the archives in one of two ways.
-
WCM Workstation
- Direct connection to the archive database on a server via Microsoft Access
-
WMS~Web – The browser interface accessing via Intranet
or Internet.

 |
| WMS~WEB user interface is
intended for general access over standard internet browsers. Note that the WEB
interface at V1.2 does not have all the graphing features that the WORKSTATION
product has but these are in development and will be added to WMS~Web
in routine updates as they are released.
