WHEEL DEFECT CHARACTERISATION
The other primary function of the system is in detection and analysis of wheel
defects. The system has a very large dynamic range and can detect and classify
defects down to a few millimetres (1/8 inch) in size all the way up to the
largest skids.
The sensor array gives 100% coverage of all wheel diameters up to 1.2metres.
The system can discriminate many defect types that other systems cannot even
detect including long period defects and multiple defects on the same wheel.
Defect classification is independent of speed and load.
Just like the load analysis the user can configure the criteria for defect
alarms. In addition to the basic defect classification, the severity of a WCM
alarm can take into account other factors such as combined number/severity of
defects on any/all wheels in a wagon, vehicle type, tag or even the owner of
the train.
